Several students at Southern Heights Elementary School may have norovirus

Up to 50 students at Southern Heights Elementary School (located at 11249 14th Ave S.) may have been infected with norovirus, a flu-like illness most frequently associated with cruise ships and enclosed, crowded spaces.

“Parents received an automated call last night that there were suspected cases of Norovirus at school and that they were working with public health officials and disinfecting the school,” one concerned parent told us on Thursday (Feb. 12).

Protect Yourself and Others from Norovirus.

She also added:

“I just learned that 50 children called in sick today and they are primarily younger students that are ill.”

According to the Center for Disease Control:

“Norovirus is a very contagious virus that can infect anyone. You can get it from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. The virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed. This leads you to have stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea and to throw up. These symptoms can be serious for some people, especially young children and older adults.”

Highline Public Schools sent home the following letter to parents, as well as a factsheet (download PDF here):

February 12, 2015

Dear Southern Heights Families,

There has been an increase in student absences recently at our school. We have had reports that several students have been ill with vomiting and/or diarrhea. We are working with Public Heath – Seattle & King County because this is suspected to be norovirus which has symptoms similar to stomach flu. Attached, please find a fact sheet about norovirus infections from Public Health – Seattle & King County.

Since norovirus infections are extremely contagious from person-to-person and can easily become an outbreak that affects many people, we have instituted the following recommendations of Public Health – Seattle & King County:

  1. We are keeping track of how many children are ill each day by classroom.
  2. We have instituted additional environmental cleaning and disinfection procedures and are cleaning and disinfecting doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, and commonly used items frequently.
  3. There will be no common sharing of food or classroom parties until this is controlled. Please do not send treats to school for your child’s classroom.

Because norovirus infection can be spread very easily in households as well as schools and other institutions, families should also practice diligence in washing their hands at home, thoroughly clean their home to prevent household transmission, and follow the guideline in the fact sheet about preventing norovirus illness.

If your child becomes ill contact your health care provider. Be sure your child stays home until 48 hours after the symptoms have stopped. That is the best way to stop the spread of the virus.

Sincerely,
Aimée Denver, RN, M.Ed.
Director Social and Health Services

PUGET SOUND WEATHER GEEK: Winter? What Winter?

by Chris Scragg
Puget Sound Weather Geek

There seems to be nothing Winter-like about this Winter! I suppose we’ve skipped Winter and jumped straight into Spring because there’s hardly any snow in the mountains (15″ on Snoqualmie) and we’ve hit multiple high temperature records this season.

Even on Friday, we broke the 59’F record set back in 1996 with a high of 60’F at SeaTac.

KOMO News – WSI Fusion

If you think that’s kooky, get this – the NWS climate forecasts are projecting above average temperatures for the next 8 months! Keep in mind that long range forecasts rarely pan out very accurately. However, this is very interesting, and the previous months’ long range forecasts of warmer temperatures for the Pacific Northwest have been mostly accurate. There could be some negative side effects to having such a warm Winter, combined with a warm Spring and Summer. We’ll have to see what happens.

NOAA Three Month Outlook March, April May,

For the short term It’ll get a little soggy at times this weekend, but showers will be light, and few and far between. The oncoming showers looked rather ominous on radar on Friday, but will likely lose their strength as they approach.

We’ll get back to mostly clear skies with comfortable temperatures for the weekend, and into the following week.

Have a good Valentines Weekend!

P.S : If you have an interest in weather, you should make time to visit the Pacific Northwest Weather Workshop held at the National Weather Service on Sandpoint. There will be many people from the local weather community there! http://www.atmos.washington.edu/pnww/index2015.php?page=main

POLL: Should school bonds be passed with a simple majority or not?

$
0
0

Rep. Mia Gregerson, who also serves as the appointed Mayor of SeaTac, released a statement this week endorsing a simple majority for school bonds.

Currently, a supermajority of 60 percent is required to pass school bonds in the state of Washington.

The Highline Public Schools bond on the Feb. 10 ballot is failing with 54.76% approval – a percentage that some think should be enough to pass the bond.

A new law – House Bill 1941 (download PDF here) – is being proposed to change this law, and would apply to November elections. Voters would have to approve the revision before it would become law.

In addition to Rep. Gregerson, Rep. Tina Orwall (D-Des Moines) and Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon (D-Burien) are also sponsors of the bill, along with over 40 others.

A public hearing is scheduled in the House Committee on Education at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, with an executive session scheduled for Feb. 19.

Here’s Gregerson’s statement:

“I was greatly saddened to see yet another school construction bond fail this week. The Highline School District’s buildings are overcrowded and in desperate need of repair.

Here are the numbers:

  • 1,500 new students in the last five years, with more coming
  • 60 portable classrooms now in use
  • 232 school construction bonds have gotten more than 50 percent of the vote from 1999 to 2013, yet they all failed because of the supermajority requirement

The current system is broken. Why is 54.6 percent a landslide for a politician, yet a failure for our public schools?

The majority of voters in the Highline School District said yes to a new school construction bond. Yet it won’t happen.

Our children deserve better. Our children are worthy of learning in real classrooms and schools, not converted broom closets and leaky trailers. Real classrooms don’t have wheels.

It’s time for a change. That is why I and large group of my colleagues have introduced new legislation, HB 1941, to allow school bonds to pass on a simple majority in November Elections.

I believe all voters deserve to have their voice heard in our democracy. November Elections have greater turnouts than special elections. And 50 percent plus one is democracy. A simple majority was passed for school levies in 2008. Today, simple majority for bonds makes sense given new mandate to reduce class size.

I look forward to a productive conversation at the public hearing of this bill on Monday, February 16th at 1:30 in the Education Committee. I am confident I can work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass this important bill for Washington’s children.”

We’re wondering what YOU think – should this law be changed or not? Please take our poll:

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Meet ‘Valentino,’ a Beaver rescued at Three Tree Point on Valentine’s Day

Meet “Valentino” the Beaver…

IMG_6445

One local resident quipped, “It takes a village to heal a beaver.” For several hours on Valentine’s Day afternoon, nearby neighbors gathered around a large beaver that was beached, likely injured, at one of the public access points just north of Three Tree Point.

Big questions circulated:

  • How did this fresh water-inhabiting mammal end up on the salt water shoreline?
  • Where did it come from?
  • Was it sick, injured, in shock, in pain?
  • Would it survive?

Some imagined that it had been a stowaway on a barge and somehow got dumped into the Sound. Others thought it had been washed down one of the local streams. No one remembered having ever seen a beaver in this area.

imagejpeg_0-2

imagejpeg_2

imagejpeg_0-3

A call was made to Burien C.A.R.E.S., though they were closed for the afternoon. Then another call to 9-1-1, who then got in touch with C.A.R.E.S. At about 5:30 p.m., Animal Control Officer Alex arrived at the beach with an animal carrier crate. When he picked up the beaver, the animal struggled a bit, showing its strength in spite of injury. Officer Alex said he’d drive 40 minutes south to take the beaver to South Sound Critter Care.

As he walked away, all the neighbors dubbed the critter “Valentino, the Beaver” and wished it well.
